Elementary Teachings About Christ

 


Hebrews 6:1–2 (NIV) lists the “elementary teachings” about Christ as six basics:
  1. Repentance from acts that lead to death - Turning away from sinful deeds
  2. Faith in God - Trusting God through Christ for salvation and life
  3. Instruction about baptisms/washings - Basic teaching on purification and Christian baptism
  4. Laying on of hands - Practice used for blessing, commissioning, healing, and reception of the Spirit
  5. Resurrection of the dead - The future bodily resurrection hope
  6. Eternal judgment - The final judgement and eternal destinies

1. Repentance from acts that lead to death

  • Hebrews 9:14 -- Christ cleanses our consciences from “acts that lead to death.”

5. Resurrection of the dead

  • John 5:28-29 -- All in the graves will hear his voice and come out.
  • John 6:39-40; 11:25-26 -- Jesus raises believers at the last day; he is the resurrection and the life.
  • 1 Corinthians 15:12-23; 42-44; 51-57 -- Christ’s resurrection and ours; transformation and victory over death.
  • 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17 -- The dead in Christ will rise first.
  • Philippians 3:20-21 -- Our lowly bodies transformed to be like his glorious body.
  • Daniel 12:2 -- OT promise of resurrection to everlasting life or contempt.

6. Eternal judgment

  • Hebrews 9:27 -- People die once and then face judgment.
  • Acts 17:31 -- God has set a day to judge the world by the appointed Man.
  • John 5:22, 27-29 -- Judgment entrusted to the Son; resurrection to life or judgment.
  • Romans 2:5-11; 14:10-12 -- Impartial judgment; each will give an account.
  • 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9 -- Everlasting destruction away from the Lord’s presence.
  • Matthew 12:36; 13:40–43; 25:31–46 -- Account for every word; final separation; eternal punishment/life.
  • Revelation 20:11-15; 21:8 -- Great white throne; second death.
  • Jude 6-7 -- Examples of God’s judgment.
  • 2 Peter 2:4, 9–10; 3:7 -- The Lord knows how to hold the unrighteous for the day of judgment.
