Insist on figuring out in our own
Why do we sometimes insist on "figuring it out on our own," even when experienced people offer to teach us the right technique?
Through the lens of the NIV Bible and the principles of Christ, scripture reveals five core reasons we resist the help of others:
1. Pride and Self-Wisdom
We easily get trapped in being "wise in [our] own eyes" (Proverbs 26:12). Yet, Scripture reminds us that "the wise listen to advice" (Proverbs 12:15).
2. A Lack of Childlike Humility
Jesus taught that true growth requires the lowly, receptive posture of a child (Matthew 18:3-4). Refusing to be a student is often a defense mechanism of the ego.
3. The Illusion of "Already Seeing"
Jesus warned that claiming we already know the way blocks us from receiving truth (John 9:41). If we believe we are already experts, we close our minds to learning.
4. Resisting Correction
Learning requires being corrected. Proverbs 15:32 warns that "those who disregard discipline despise themselves," but accepting correction builds understanding.
5. Rejecting Interdependence
God designed us to grow in community, not isolation. When we refuse mentoring, we reject the principle that "iron sharpens iron" (Proverbs 27:17).
Growth doesn't happen in stubborn isolation. True wisdom begins when we lay down our pride and choose to be teachable.
