Why husbands are not listening to their wife as they age?

 Some wives think that their husbands are not listening to what they say as they get older. And, wonder about the meaning of husband's love towards them.

When evaluated against the principles of Christ in the bible, this way of thinking is *not aligned* with the principles of Christ. 

While feeling hurt or lonely when a spouse becomes less attentive is an understandable human emotion, concluding that a husband’s love has lost its meaning -- or that he no longer loves his wife simply because his listening habits change with age -- conflicts with the biblical view of love, covenant, and grace.

Following is an explanation based on Christ’s principles, accompanied by biblical references:

1. The Biblical Definition of Love (*Agape*)

According to the principles of Christ, marital love is modeled after Christ’s unconditional, sacrificial devotion to the Church. Biblical love is defined by commitment, action, and endurance, rather than perfect human attentiveness or ideal communication skills.

* 1 Corinthians 13:4–7 -- Real love is patient, kind, bears all things, believes all things, and endures through changing seasons and difficulties.

* Ephesians 5:25, 28 -- A husband’s love is rooted in a covenantal command to care for his wife as his own body, which remains true even when physical or cognitive limitations arise.

2. Extending Grace and Understanding in Aging

Aging often brings physical changes -- such as gradual hearing loss, reduced mental processing speed, or diminished attention spans. Christ calls believers to respond to the weakness or decline of others with grace, patience, and compassion, rather than doubt and suspicion. Equating a physical decline in listening with a heart that no longer loves ignores the reality of human frailty.

* Colossians 3:12–14 -- Believers are commanded to clothe themselves with compassion, kindness, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving shortcomings.

* Galatians 6:2 -- Fulfilling the law of Christ involves carrying one another’s burdens and supporting a spouse through the vulnerabilities of aging.

* 1 Peter 4:8 -- Deep, earnest love is meant to extend grace and overlook physical or relational flaws.

3. Avoiding Unjust Judgments

Measuring a spouse’s love solely through the lens of how well they listen in old age can lead to hasty or unfair judgments about their heart and intentions. Christ teaches His followers not to judge by superficial standards or to assume the worst about someone's motives.

* Matthew 7:1–2 -- Warning against unfair or harsh judgments of others.

* 1 Samuel 16:7 -- Reminds believers that while humans look at outward actions or physical abilities, God looks at the heart.

4. The Biblical Standard for Husbands

At the same time, Scripture acknowledges that communication and consideration are important duties for husbands. The Bible instructs husbands to treat their wives with honor and understanding. However, when a husband falls short due to age or personal flaws, the biblical response for the wife is to seek understanding and extend grace rather than questioning the foundation of covenant love.

* 1 Peter 3:7 -- Exhortation for husbands to live with their wives in an understanding and respectful way.

* Colossians 3:19 -- Direction for husbands to love their wives and not be harsh with them.

Summary

The thought that a husband’s love has lost its meaning due to age-related inattentiveness is not aligned with Christ’s principles. Biblical love is an enduring covenant that extends beyond temporary behavior or physical decline. Christ calls wives and husbands alike to practice patience, grant grace, assume goodwill, and uphold love through every stage of life.

Accountability to One Another in Christ

  Few years back, my understanding of accountability and judgement got mixed up. If you had asked me a question related to what I did & why I did, I'd immediately think that you were judging me. And, I'd feel vulnerable in responding openly and transparently to your question. I'll often want to know why you want to know & how you are going to use the information.  But the grace of God overflowed for me.
