Walking as Children of Light

A World Sunday School Day Reflection | Mateer Memorial Cathedral Church, Trivandrum | Sermon by a 11th grader | Nov 1, 2026

“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth).”

- Ephesians 5:8-9 (NIV)

The Nursery of Faith - Nurturing the Church of Today

Founded in 1780 by Robert Raikes to teach children reading, writing, and the Word of God, Sunday School remains the church’s greatest mission field. From global frontiers to local communities, it serves as the spiritual nursery where faith takes root.

At Mateer Memorial Cathedral, consecrated in 1906 in memory of missionary, scholar, and educator Rev. Samuel Mateer, the Sunday school ministry (with its dedicated fellowship of teachers and students) is not a side project; it is central to the life of the church.

Scripture reminds us that God often entrusts His greatest purposes to the young, as seen in the lives of Samuel, Josiah, David, Miriam, and Esther.

Jesus commanded, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these” (Matthew 19:14) and warned never to look down on these little ones (Matthew 18:10). Children are not merely the church of tomorrow; they are the church of today.

The Theme - Cast Off Darkness, Walk in the Light (Ephesians 5:1-14)

We are not called simply to admire the resurrection life of Christ from a distance, but to let His life dwell in us and shine through us.

Walking as children of light unfolds in five daily callings:

1. Stand Firm in Faithful Obedience

Like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego facing the fiery furnace (Daniel 3:16–30), our loyalty belongs entirely to God. They chose uncompromising faithfulness over self-preservation. In an age of compromise, walking in the light means choosing obedience to God above popularity or convenience.

2. Cultivate Goodness, Righteousness, and Truth

The fruit of Christ’s light produces tangible change: active goodness, a lifestyle of righteousness, and pure truthfulness. We are called to walk in love (Ephesians 5:2) and deliberately abandon deceit, bitterness, and the unfruitful works of darkness.

3. Allow Christ’s Light to Expose Hidden Darkness

Light not only guides; it reveals. When we come before Christ, His holiness gently uncovers our hidden dishonesty, quiet pride, and deep-seated resentments. Walking in light requires humility, heartfelt confession, and repentance, yielding our brokenness so His grace can reshape our character.

4. Shine as the Light of the World

Jesus said a lamp is set on a stand to give light to everyone in the house (Matthew 5:14-16). Our faith cannot be confined within church walls; it must be visible in our everyday conduct. When we return forgiveness instead of vengeance, people see Christ. Many will never open a Bible, but they will read the testimony of how we respond in times of trial.

5. Walk Daily in Endurance and Renewal

Transformation is not a one-time event; it is a daily discipline. Every day brings a choice between love or hatred, humility or arrogance, integrity or compromise. Even when we stumble, Christ’s mercy restores us as we turn back to Him.

As we abandon sinful habits and run the race set before us, the Lord promises to renew our strength so that we “will walk and not be faint” (Isaiah 40:31).

Anchored in the “peace of God, which transcends all understanding” (Philippians 4:7), we continue to shine faithfully until we reach our heavenly home.
