Mathew 14 - Meditation by Kevin Samuel Premkumar

This chapter talks about 2 of Jesus's greatest miracles: feeding the five thousand and walking on water. The chapter also mentions the death of John the Baptist.

So when Herod Antipas heard about Jesus, he thought he was John the Baptist come to life, because once, at his birthday party, his wife Herodias's daughter performed a dance that pleased him a lot, so he promised an oath to give her anything she asks for. At her mother's urging, the girl asked for the head of John the Baptist on a tray, for Herodias had been Herod's brother's former wife, and John kept telling Herod that it was illegal for him to marry her, and this had angered Herodias. As Herod had to keep to his word, he had John the Baptist executed.

Something which we could learn from this unfortunate incident is never take an oath that you can keep. In this scenario, Herod had impulsively given his word and had said he would give anything that the girl asks for. We should always avoid making such promises, and stay firm on simply a 'yes' or a 'no'.

When Jesus had heard the news of John's death, he went off by himself in a boat to a remote area to be alone. But soon enough, the crowds heard about where he was and they all went there. Still, Jesus was moved with compassion and He healed them.

Later that evening, the disciples were planning on sending the crowds back to their villages so that they can buy food for themselves. But Jesus prompted that they should feed the crowds, with whatever food they had, which was only five loaves of bread and two fish. Then Jesus looked up at heaven, prayed over the food and handed it down to his disciples, who passed down the food to the crowds. And miraculously, God had fed the five thousand and there were even 12 baskets of leftovers.

Sometimes, life may bring us problems, they could be financial, problems in the community or spiritual problems. With what we have, the solution to the problem may seem impossible. That's why we need to trust in God and give him whatever we have sit hat he can multiply it and take care of our needs.
