Mathew 23 - 25 - Meditation of Kevin Samuel Premkumar

Jesus warns the religious leaders and the Pharisees for their hypocrisy and their attention-seeking nature. He tells them that they cannot escape God's judgement or wrath so they need to repent. Jesus also foretells the future, prophesying and predicting what the end times will be like. There was two lines in the passage that I found interesting: " 'I assure you, this generation will not pass from the scene before all these things take place. Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will remain forever.' " [Matthew 24:34-35, NLT]

Jesus says these words for all the generations to hear, not just for the disciples. That's why it was recorded in the Scriptures. This verse is very much active and applicable even in our times. Our generation, neither Jesus's generation, nor will the generations before that escape God's wrath.

Then Jesus told them a story about ten bridesmaids who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were wise, but the other five were not wise. The five wise ones took extra oil for their lamps, and the other five did not. When the bridegroom was delayed, they all fell asleep. Then at midnight, they were all awaken by the shout, "Look, the bridegroom is coming!"

The five foolish bridesmaids asked the five wise ones if they could borrow some oil for their lamps, for it won't last long. The wise ones replied that then the oil will not be enough for themselves and they advised the five foolish bridesmaids to quickly go out to the shop and buy oil for their lamps. But when the bridesmaids were out, the bridegroom came in, locked the door, and started the banquet feast. When the bridesmaids returned they found that the door was closed and they called out to be permitted inside. But the bridegroom replied, "Go away, I do not know you."

What an unfortunate moment for the bridesmaids! But the same is God's second coming. We must ready ourselves and be wise and wait for his coming. If we are not ready, then we will not be chosen into eternal life.
